UTM Aims RM100 mil Sales From IT Products
Kuala Lumpur, Jan 23: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) aims to earn RM100 million from the five-year licensing agreement signed with Nexus Protocol Ltd to market four information technology-based products in Europe.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang said the agreement, inked on Dec 12 last year, was to sell the IT software to institutional clients and individual customers.
We identified Nexus Protocol as our joint-venture partner to forge a smart partnership collaboration to commercialise UTM's information technology products outside Malaysia, particularly in Europe, he told a press conference today.
He said UTM would benefit from London-based Nexus Protocol's expertise and business network in Europe and South East Asia to provide more international exposure for its products.
Under the agreement, Nexus Protocol will start with an initial four information technology-based products and ultimately target to market 20 products on a staggered basis.
Zaini said the initial four software products were MyLine Online Resources for Learning in English, Laboratory Information Management System, Human Resource Management Information System and Wastewater Treatment Plan Design Advisor.
He said two other products would be introduced this year namely the Thalassemia Disease Mortality Prediction and Flood Mitigation System.
Zaini said some of the software has been used widely in the country and had the potential to be used globally but UTM alone cannot make it a reality due to marketing constraints.
He said Nexus Protocol, which has been appointed the universityâs representative overseas, would also advise and facilitate UTM on efforts to improve product competitiveness internationally.
He said the move to commercially market the products with Nexus Protocol was initiated by UTMâs Innovation and Commercialisation Centre which was responsible for protecting and marketing the universityâs intellectual property rights estimated at around 2,800 patents.
UTM signed a similar agreement with California-based Stanford Research Institute International in 2011 to market UTM's products in the United States, Japan and China, he added.

UTM, UK Firm in Healthcare Deal
"We've got quite a lot of technologies marketed globally and won a lot of awards in Malaysia and UK and it is time for us to have cooperation with institutions in Malaysia, especially with UTM, which has developed new products which can be marketed worldwide.
"We are confident that the collaboration will result in a big impact on commercial aspects for both UTM and NPL," Hamidi added.
He said in Malaysia, NPL had been active in providing health care products for the Health Ministry.
According to Zaini, they were already in discussions with many ministries and institutions which would benefit from this project and among them were the Ministry of Health and the Malaysian Development Corporation.
"We feel with NPL we would leverage on our present research capabilities. We have more than 500 PhD students working on various applications and softwares.
"We have already done the research part. This is a new development and knowing that NPL has done it for many applications, we should be able to commercialise it by the end of this year.

SEVEN companies were recognised by the Multimedia Development Corp Sdn Bhd (MDeC) yesterday for their leadership in the country's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) and outstanding contributions to the ICT (information and communication technology) industry.
Six companies got MSC Leadership awards for their research and development (R&D) efforts, while IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd received the accolade for its contribution in ICT services and outsourcing initiatives.
The six are Motorola Multimedia Sdn Bhd, Intel MSC Sdn Bhd, Exact Asia Development Centre Sdn Bhd, Green Packet Bhd, BT Multimedia Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Inter Nexus Protocol Sdn Bhd.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Samsuddin Osman presented the awards at a ceremony in Cyberjaya held in conjunction with MSC Malaysia's 10th anniversary that was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday.
Award recipients were selected based on significant contributions to the MSC by undertaking high value work in the field of ICT, high level of R&D spending, hiring large numbers of Malaysian workforce, and a high degree of compliance to MSC standards and guidelines.
MDeC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali said the recognition to the companies was timely as the MSC moves into its next phase, focusing on sustaining the country's competitiveness in the global market.
"As we mark the 10th anniversary of the MSC today, we need to take cognisance of its achievements over the last decade."
Abdul Halim described Phase One of the MSC (1996-2003) as highly successful. The second phase saw the MSC rolled out to two other regions - Penang Cybercity and Kulim High Tech Park.
Currently, the MSC has more than 1,400 MSC-status companies with 69 being world-class companies, and creating over 40,000 jobs.
MDeC chief executive officer Badlisham Ghazali said the firm is now giving priority to develop the creative multimedia industry.
"Many have known that we have about 95 multimedia companies within MSC which are already exporting their products and services."
MDeC is making a big step towards that with the production of Malaysia's first ever computer animation project.
The firm is producing 13 half-hour episodes of Saladin animated TV series aimed at breaking into the global animation market, Badlisham said.
Saladin will start its global marketing campaign once the pilot is completed by year-end.
